Akon’s second album, “Konvicted” (2006), continued his success, earning a Grammy Award nomination for Best Contemporary R&B Album. Its lead singles, “I Wanna Love You” (featuring Snoop Dogg) and “Smack That” (featuring Eminem), both received nominations for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration and peaked at numbers one and two on the Billboard Hot 100, respectively. In 2007, he achieved the rare feat of holding the top two positions on the Billboard Hot 100 concurrently with his singles “Don’t Matter” and his guest performance on Gwen Stefani’s “The Sweet Escape.”

His third album, “Freedom” (2008), featured the top ten lead single “Right Now (Na Na Na).” His fourth album, “El Negreeto” (2019), explored reggaeton and Latin music.

In addition to his solo career, Akon has appeared on 23 Billboard Hot 100 entries for other artists, earning him two additional Grammy Award nominations. He founded the record labels Konvict Muzik in 2004 and KonLive Distribution in 2007, signing successful acts such as Lady Gaga, T-Pain, R. City, Kardinal Offishall, Jeffree Star, and French Montana. Akon is also a prolific producer and songwriter, working with artists like Michael Jackson, Snoop Dogg, Lionel Richie, Leona Lewis, Sean Paul, Whitney Houston, Mario, and Estelle.

Akon is known for his charitable and philanthropic efforts. He launched the non-profit organization Akon Lighting Africa in 2014 and has started developing his own city in Senegal, slated for completion in 2028. Forbes ranked him 80th on the Forbes Celebrity 100 in 2010 and 5th on the list of 40 Most Powerful Celebrities in Africa in 2011. Billboard ranked Akon No. 6 on the list of Top Digital Songs Artists of the decade, and Guinness World Records listed him as the number-one selling artist for master ringtones, with 11 million sold by December 2007.

Aliaune Damala Bouga Time Puru Nacka Lu Lu Lu Badara Akon Thiam was born on April 16, 1973, in St. Louis, Missouri, to a Muslim family. His mother, Kine Gueye Thiam (née Gueye), is a dancer, and his father, Mor Thiam, is a percussionist. Mor Thiam was born into a Toucouleur family of Quranic scholars in Kaolack, Senegal. Akon spent a significant part of his childhood in Senegal, which he describes as his “hometown.” He learned to play five instruments, including drums, guitar, and djembe. At age seven, his family relocated to Union City, New Jersey, splitting their time between the United States and Senegal until eventually settling in Newark. Growing up in New Jersey, Akon had difficulties getting along with other children. When he and his older brother reached high school, their parents left them on their own in Jersey City and moved the rest of the family to Atlanta, Georgia. Akon attended William L. Dickinson High School in Jersey City.

Freedom song:

Production on Akon’s third studio album, “Freedom,” began in May 2008 and concluded later that year. Initially intended to be called “Acquitted,” the album’s title was ultimately changed to “Freedom” by Akon’s label, Universal Music. Despite containing some explicit language, the album does not carry a Parental Advisory warning, marking a first for Akon’s discography.

In July, a leaked recording of Akon’s duet with Michael Jackson, titled “Hold My Hand,” surfaced online. Initially, the song was posted as an Akon demo featuring only his vocals. The leak led to speculation that the track would appear on both Akon’s and Jackson’s upcoming albums. However, in an MTV interview, Akon expressed his hope to include the song on “Freedom.” Despite this, when the track listing was officially released on October 17, the duet with Jackson was not included.

The UK bonus track, “Clap Again,” samples “Click Click Click” by New Kids on the Block. The lead single “Right Now (Na Na Na)” initially featured a verse by rapper Danny Fernandes in its leaked version, but Akon ultimately chose to perform the song solo. Additionally, the tracks “Against the Grain” and “We Don’t Care” were originally titled “Falling in Love” and “Could You Be the Reason,” respectively. The song “Troublemaker” appears to be a continuation of Akon’s first solo Billboard Hot 100 number one single, “Don’t Matter,” with lyrics that suggest a thematic connection as he sings, “Similar to the words it don’t matter, but this time they wanna see us together, look at us now.”

“Freedom” was released for download on December 1, 2008, and hit stores on December 2, 2008. The album debuted at number 7 on the Billboard 200 chart, selling 110,600 copies in its first week.
